Christ-Hau-Kwanica Solstice

Sam's daycare is very polically correct to the point where I hesitate to send him to "school" with his one pair of camouflage pants. But they do have their annual celebration of the season and yesterday afternoon we went back to daycare on a non-daycare day so Sam could sing along with his class.

Picture a large room and about 60 kids sitting in a circle. Picture a table no more than two feet tall with various types of candles, at this point unlit. Picture Sam eyeing them up with fastination.

The celebration begins with singing. And four of the candles are lit. Sam's eyes get huge! Sam's body gets closer and closer to the table, fingers reaching for the tantalizing light. Sam's mom gets off her *** (notice I resisted the urge to precede that with "fat") and heads him off. Repeat parts two and three, usually without screaming. Remove Sam's little body from the general vicinity of the fastinating burning item without success. Is he part moth? As the program continues more candles are lit and again, Sam is the only moth. I think the family pyromaniac gene is materializing at a very young age. I would have been surprised had it missed him entirely given my love of fire as a child but still, I didn't expect to have it happen so early. And I can't believe that NO other child in that room headed for the candles.

And the singing? Despite his frequent toneless singing at home (did he get that from me too or is it just taking some time for him to develop an ear?), he didn't attempt to sing along. All in all I think we may have been better to stay at home. Where, by the way, he ate two dinners.

I have no pictures from the holiday program (hard to keep other people's kids off out of the picture and I don't think it's wise to post pictures without permission) but we did take lots of pictures later in the day because, well, we splurged. Ben gave me (us) a Nikon SLR digital camera that of course we had to open early because, well, we couldn't possibly miss a Christmas-related photo opportunity. This is a HUGE step up in digital camera technology because there is no shutter lag! This means we won't miss just about every photo opportunity! Watch for even more pictures when we figure out how to download the pictures. The camera is as big as a regular camera but very light. As Ben says "there is not a single piece of metal in it!"

Love to hear that the VanDonsel pyro gene is going strong. Someone has to pick up the reins when we are gone.

And BTW, camo rules the day here. It's quite possible that here, your kid could be ostricized for NOT wearing camo to school. And let's hear it for PC. We could stand a dose of it down here

Did you get Abbie a little cammo dress for Christmas just to fit in with the natives? LOL Pink cammo. I know they have it, somewhere!

One option although not a dress:

Just add a hunting rifle, eh?

Oh wait, I do that too.
