We plan to take a mini vacation and Sam runs a fever. Ah yes, this evening we're planning to drive to NJ to meet my sister who has driven from Arkansas to NJ to see friends. We couldn't seem to convince her to drive another six hours for some strange reason so we're planning to go there. Got a great rate at a new hotel by, you guessed it, paying 100% up front with no cancellation or change option. What a deal, eh?
At this point we're still planning to go so long as Sam isn't showing signs of GI problems or some other obvious problem. If he's throwing up not only would he be totally miserable, he'll generously share with us and having all of us sick and on the road would be highly unpleasant. And that's an understatement. I'm sure my sister would really appreciate him infecting her kids before they head back on that long miserable trip home.
I think this is a corollary to Kid's Law which states that at least one family member will be sick on every holiday.
I guess it minor holidays don't always count though because on Sat. we went to a St. Patricks Day party where Sam feasted on "m&m salad" which is a creative mixture of regular and peanut m&m's. Hey! It contains greens! And it was very amusing watching him transport his salad on a plate -- he very patiently reloaded the plate each time some rolled off while he moved. His dessert consisted of a very large shamrock cookie. A day of nutritional excellence for Sam but in social situations I've learned that it's easiest to let him eat pretty much whatever he wants to eat and to save the balanced diet for home. Well, he gets that balanced diet from me but if Ben is in charge, his diet is void of fruits and veggies because, well, Ben isn't fond of them so he doesn't bother to give them to Sam. Besides, my "balanced" party meal was a large quantity of yummy corned beef and Ben's was primarily Irish whiskey so in the scheme of things, Sam did ok.

I hope Sam feels better immediately - I know how much you are looking forward to seeing your sister! If he only has a fever, maybe that means he'll just sleep in the car the whole way, which wouldn't be a bad thing (in my vast child rearing experience, that is...)
Assuming you go to NJ, when do you plan to return??
isnt a trip to NJ enough to make anyone sick and repulse the best of us world travelers? Aaaah the smell of the smoke stacks and their carcinogens along the NJTPK breathe deep while you can! NOT.
Nothing like EZ PASS to cut down on the time in the lanes to breath the filth into our lungs.
I've got hives just thinking about it.
Required NJ Trip Question: Which Exit? HA!
Noo Joisey is best in the rear view mirror.

Exit 9 on the NJTP. Ben dreads NJ although he does realize that he can get really good Pad Thai there compared to home.
Oh, and Beth, Sam didn't sleep nearly enough...
Dicky and I visited my cousin in NJ in October. He lives in Kinnelon, which is more rural than many parts of Vermont. It was really pretty and, in fact, his neighborhood was totally overrun with black bears! Not bad for being only 30 miles from the geo Washington bridge...
You are right, Beth, there are many very pretty areas in NJ, you just have to know where to look for them amongst the 6 lane highways and strip malls.
Ben once confessed to me that he doesn't mind New Jersey nearly as much as he puts on. After all, "There's really good shopping"!!
