I don’t know where Sam learned this but on Easter morning we told him that the Easter bunny came during the night and asked him what he thought the Easter bunny did while he was here. Sam told us “he leave things for me.” We never taught him that so I suppose the two year olds are talking amongst themselves.
He ran downstairs and discovered that the Easter bunny had indeed left things for him. He spotted the Tonka backhoe and was in toddler heaven. I should have left it at that but why or why did I point to the plastic egg? He picked it up, shook it and the candy eating began in earnest. The Easter bunny hid six eggs with small amounts of candy in them and he found it made a nice and tasty breakfast.
He had very little interest in the rest of the things in the basket. For some reason the Easter bunny left him train themed big-boy underpants – he must think he’s farther along the potty training journey than he actually is. There was also a water bottle, a pair of pajamas, and some pirate tattoos.
To continue the candy theme, we went to a neighborhood Easter egg hunt late in the morning. The neighbors hid 290 plastic eggs filled with candy around the houses and invited all the kids in the neighborhood to attend. Sam managed to score about a half a dozen eggs -- plenty of candy for lunch.
Nap? What nap? A sugar buzzed Sam is a nap resistant Sam. He’s learned how to bypass the doohickey (technical term I’m sure) we put on the doorknob to keep him in his room so every few minutes I’d hear the door open and the pitter patter of Sammy feet. I’d stop whatever I was doing, run upstairs, pick him up and put him back in bed, close the door, and leave. I don’t remember how many times I did that before he gave up but it was significant. This is a fight I’m willing to fight – Sam’s going to have mandatory naptime forever. I suspect that when he’s a teenager and I can’t get him out of bed to go to school in the morning I’ll look back at that vow and laugh but more the moment, *I* need his naptime even more than he does.
We had Easter dinner with friends who brought lots of cake to go with the candy he had earlier in the day so Sam managed to stay buzzed through the evening. It was not only an Easter celebration; it was also Judyboo and Hal’s birthdays. Hal wasn’t here but still, happy birthday dude.
