There are the stereotypes. Women shop for fun, for therapy, etc. But around this house, the shopper is Ben. A hobby is merely an opportunity to make acquisitions. Today I worked all day and Ben watched Sam. When I watch Sam, I try to wear him out through the old standards: the park, the library, visiting friends, “helping” with housework, ice skating, flying kites, hiking up mountains, etc. Most of it good wholesome stuff enjoyed by everyone. But Ben, well, for some reason watching Sam leads to shopping. During my absence today, Ben purchased the following:
- An MP3 player for his motorcycle. Ack! Who knew that Harley Davidson makes MP3 players? And why would it be superior to the MP3 player he already owns?
- A Harley Davidson red pig-shaped piggy bank for Sam. To be honest, I was looking for a bank for him because it’s better for him to be excited about putting the coins he finds around the house on a regular basis in a piggy bank rather than eating them. I figured a plastic bottle with a slot in it would work fairly well…
- A new toy tractor for Sam. John Deere replica of course.*
I would guess there is more that I have yet to discover but I can’t be certain of this. Oh, and they went out for breakfast too although that doesn’t actually qualifies as shopping.
But there is more to this story. Last night Ben watched Sam so I could go to a book club meeting and guess what happened? Book shopping! Ben came home with at least one book for himself and four books for Sam. Ben’s book is about places to mountain bike in Vermont because this week he decided that he needed to get back into mountain biking. But of course his bike is too old and everything would be so much better if he had a new bike. And let’s not forget the opportunity for purchasing accessories and clothing! He’s got to watch Sam again a week from Friday and I’m very afraid I’ll come home to a new mountain bike. Don’t worry though, in a little while he’ll sell it to fund his next new hobby.
At this rate I don’t think I can afford to have Ben watch Sam while I’m gone….
*Perhaps in all fairness I need to mention that I stopped at the toy store on the way home and got him a little airplane because I’d been meaning to do it for months and had a few minutes to spare since I wasn’t rushing home to go pick Sam up from daycare. This poor kid is so deprived of toys….

I have much in common with Ben. I read your post and thought that I couldn't wait to see a picture of Sam's new tractor! I think he also needs one of those toy mowers that blows bubbles if he doesn't have that yet. And a sandbox!
Maybe I should take pictures of each of his acquisitions, eh? How much bandwidth would that take? But he definitely needs a sandbox for this upcoming summer and I'm hoping that he'll actually spend lots of time out there.
It appears that Ben has been shirking his duty to buy more guns. C'mon, Ben, pick up the pace a little!
Yes, Duck hunting is just 5 or 6 months away!!
