We decided that Sam needed an introduction to fishing and rather than do the standard from- the-shore-introduction we took him out in the boat. Picture it, a restless two year old, a boat on the open water (ok, it was a large pond, not even a lake so perhaps open water is pushing it), and the boat filled all sorts of things that he wasn't supposed to mess with. Ben hadn't thought ahead to the fact that Sam would actually want to fish rather than roam around the boat and be bored. I made Ben pull to the shore where I nabbed a branch and made a fishing pole for him. And guess who got the only fish? Ok, caught isn't an appropriate term in this case; Sam found a lure that looked like a little fish stuck in a branch but still, it was a fish. Of sorts. But he was pretty thrilled with it and we had to keep him from flinging it around in the boat spearing us with the hook. He didn't understand the concept of being quiet so as not to scare the fish but it's not as though I really expected he would be quiet. It's not his nature; he's quite fond of random screams.
He lasted longer that either of us expected although I suspect that part of that had to do with the partaking of food. Food makes everything better.
Had a great day because not only did he get to go fishing, he also got to play in his swimming pool AND Susan and Seward brought him a sandbox that Seward had made. He jumped in the pool in his clothes and then rolled around in the sandbox to make a delightful mess. He's thrilled and there is now the possibility that I'll be able to do some yardwork without Sam disappearing on me. A very wonderful gift for both of us.
