I was sufficiently motivated to do some laundry today and as was hanging up Ben's shirts, it occurred to me that it looked like he had lots of the same shirts. He basically wears three different types of shirts, rugby, oxford, and polo with a smattering of other stuff just for variety. Since it's summer, he's pretty much in full polo mode at the moment. Out of curiosity, I hung the shirts together by type and color. Inventory follows
15 polo shirts:
They're mostly in the orange/burgundy color range with a couple of other, generally muted, shades thrown in for good measure. I like him in the bright gold and the bright pink ones best but doubt I could make the others disappear. He'd definitely notice. Since he has more than a two-week supply you might infer that we don't do laundry very often but you would be wrong. I do at least five loads a week so it is unlikely he'll ever have a polo emergency. His need for multiple copies of the same shirt may be a holdover from the years he did (or forgot to do) his own laundry.
23 oxford shirts (and I think he's wearing one at the moment so a total of more than a 3 week supply): 3 nearly identical green ones, 2 identical redish ones, 3 white ones and a variety of other colors, and strips
I've tried to get him to cull out a few of the shirts he doesn't wear but he won't admit that he doesn't wear any of these shirts so his section of the closet is slowly creeping into my section which looks very empty compared to his.
And he wonders why I roll my eyes when he gets yet another shipment of shirts from LL Bean.

I sort of understand his duplicating his wardrobe though. For some reason, if I see a style of shirt or pants that I like, I often buy two of that item, but in different colors. But only two, mind you, and I always end up favoring one color over the other, no matter what.
But...I don't have 15 of any color
I don't think I have 15 of any one type of clothing at all. 15 pairs of pants? Unlikely. 15 tee shirts? Also unlikely. Dresses. Nah. Shorts. Definitely not. Maybe socks and underwear.
Maybe it's a man thing. I'm just glad he doesn't need to wear suits...
