Next week when Sam goes to daycare he'll no longer be a Dragonfly, he'll be a Coyote*. He's very excited to do something new and I'm very happy there is no formal graduation from one room to the next. I don't enjoy celebrating non-events. It does, however, mean we need to change our morning routine so this morning after I dropped him off I checked with the teachers in the new area so drop off wouldn't be a mysterious and time-consuming event. And I must say, I find the new area much more interesting than where he is now so I suspect I won't hear "I don't want to go to school today" nearly as often. His new area has a pre-school curriculum and more variety in activities but best of all, they spend a lot of time outside all year around. This kid NEEDS energy expenditure and the type I like best for him is the kind that doesn't require much from me because I'm lazy, lazy, lazy. I wish he'd play fetch like a dog but alas, his needs are somewhat more complex. I also wish he'd exercise with me rather than disrupt my workouts by tossing weights on the floor (hazardous all the way around), crawling under me or sitting on top of me during yoga, or finding intervention-requiring mischief and yes, I realize there is an irony in that I don't want to expend energy doing his things yet want to expend energy for my own. And yes, I do wish we could find something we both enjoy but let's just say I find his pace frustrating and he gets frustrated by my desire to have a pace. But I digress.
Although I do like that he'll have a more engaging "school" experience this coming year, I also hate to admit that he's growing up and it's appropriate for him to move forward. It's all very bittersweet. He's increasingly independent and each milestone he reaches, manufactured such as this change in daycare or real such as learning to talk, drives it home. I know that this will continue for years to come so I give him a bit of extra cuddling now while he'll still permit it and then let him go make his own mistakes.
*I don't know if the names of the rooms are based on anything but they're in order of age, youngest to oldest, Starbaby, Dragonfly, Coyote, Stardancer and er, something else that escapes me. Any idea if these are from a story or just random names?

When Sam grows up, I hope you never tell him that he was a "starbaby!"
Cute pic! Sam's got his "old man" face on.
As for different rooms in daycare, I vote that the names are totally arbitrary. I mean, at Yellow Brick Road, Abbie was a "gummi bear", but had she stayed on, she would have graduated to a "lollipop" in the lollipop room. Now, I ask you, is there something more mature about a lollipop over a gummi bear?? Personally, as a mature (mostly) adult, I find gummis more to my liking
Lisa do they ever graduate to circus peanut? I'm sure those are the most adult candy out there other than the ones that are meant to look like snot.
