We are in the midst of a disturbing trend. Sam did not nap two of the last three days! I know some kids drop their naps fairly early but we’d been going along so nicely where he’d pick up an hour of sleep or sometimes even more in the afternoon. But we appear to have passed the point where I can depend on having an hour or so to regain my sanity in the afternoon.
This transition is somewhat confusing because I’m not sure how long he needs to be awake in his room (“Mama! I want to get out now! I’m all done. Mama? Mama?”) before I give up and let him out. I’m thinking of getting a clock for his room, with hands, and marking it in some way so he knows that when the big hand is here and the little hand is there he can get out of the room even if he hasn’t slept. I’d like him to have a bit of quiet time even if he doesn’t sleep. How long? I was thinking an hour of quiet time might be nice if overambitious.
I don’t think asking him if he wants a nap would be a very good idea since of course he’d say no even if he was simultaneously yawning and rubbing his eyes. His judgment is somewhat suspect in many ways. I also don’t want to assume that he doesn’t need a nap because I think that some days he will, some days he won’t.
The good news is that he hasn’t been a bear in the evening on the days he doesn’t nap and he willingly goes to bed a bit earlier too. It’s definitely not all bad!

Sam did everything else early...walking, talking, climbing, etc. No suprise he's giving up his nap early!!
robin gave up her nap at two while her sister was still napping at five. I insisted on at least quiet time in her room , for at least an hour while her sister slept soundly. it all worked out well, keep a supply of books, crayons, and perhaps duplo blocks or something creative. good luck...by the way...caitlin at 18 will still nap, and i don't have to nag her.
