Good morning. A post about nothing in particular

We woke up to this yesterday:

Not the most appealing thing in the world but he seems to be surviving quite well. I called the doctor who told me that almost all pinkeye is caused by viruses but that VT requires kids in daycare use eyedrops in order to attend school. Antibiotic eyedrops! Useless. She said they're trying to get the law changed and since it's a long weekend I'm just letting it run its course without the course of antibiotics. What do you want to bet that both Ben and I end up with it too? Even the thought of it is making my eyes itch.

Ben tried to distract him with this:
Yes, those are dead ducks in my KITCHEN! Don't most people clean them outside? I ordered him to clean up afterward but still, I think it would be easier to do it outside, wouldn't it? I was amused to note that although he's got all sorts of hunting knives he used my kitchen knives for the dirty deed.

In case you are totally oblivious to such things like me, yesterday was opening opening day of duck hunting season and Ben the great duck hunter was successful. Not only that, he used his new kayak.

I escaped the carnage in my kitchen and the pussy (pus-y I mean, not the cat-like version or the female parts version) eye and did some leaf peeping with Beth and Dicky for hours. We meandered the backroads of Vermont stopping at garage sales and finding bargains like this new old truck and trailer for a whole $2. I love garage sales now that I have a kid. I was just looking for a close up of the thing and found a listing on ebay for it with a starting bid of $11.99 so if you want one of your very own, you can get it. That one comes with pigs, this one is pigless, not that that decreases Sam's joy. He's discovered the trailer also attaches to one of his tractors so he's in kid heaven.

I'm finding that garage sales are also terrific places to get non-essential kitchen gadgets. I bought a nice long rolling pin much larger than the standard sized one I passed on to Sam for his playdough long ago. I think it has about 15" of work surface. That'll come in handy and possibly replace my french rolling pin for making pizzas. I also picked up a pie plate with holes in the bottom for the great price of free! I'll have to test my theory that the holes are there to help the crust brown, perhaps with the apples we picked the other day.

In other non-related nothingness, I've been doing some cooking today in my usual non-measuring recipeless use-what's-in-the-house manner. I made a quiche (ironically with a store bought crust) with green chilis, salsa, and cheddar to bring to Ben's parents for lunch. I also made baked stuffed apples with a mix of butter, brown sugar, pine nuts, craisins, and oatmeal for the filling. It's excellent by the way.

Let's see, I've covered illness, death, toys, kitchen utensils, and food without ever saying anything important. Enjoy.

ooohh...gross. Yeah, we always had to use eyedrops in NJ also, before the kids could go back to daycare. They always seemed to help, but I guess it was just the virus running it's course. I hope it runs it's course for you in time!!

Nice dead ducks. Now show a picture of the comically small amout of meat obtained from each one. lol

Great yard sale finds!!
