Sam was in "school" today and when I picked him up there was not one, not two, but THREE plastic bags containing various changes of clothing. I made a little joke about him having a rough day but it turns out that he hadn't had an accident, it was just a whole lot wet and dirty clothes for other reasons unless you count the one set for bad aim....
I told him I was very proud of him and then I whispered "We're going to go and you can pick out your own big boy underpants at the store right now." His eyes got huge, he made a fish mouth, inhaled sharply and did a little excited dance of joy! I know how to generate excitement, don't I?
We made our pilgrimage to the nearest store and that just happens to be K-Fart which is at least not as bad as Sprawl-Mart and perused the toddler underwear section. It’s slim pickings for fun underwear without a licensed character – I found absolutely none. I let him pick what he wanted so he selected a three pack each of Spiderman and Cars underwear so his little butt is now encased in his first licensed character clothing. Somehow that seems appropriate, as does their likely fate.
Our neighbors, the ones that treat Sam like a grandson, were home and Sam decided he needed to take his new garments over for their admiration and inspection. Did I let him? Of course I did! Marilyn helped him take them out of the packages, they counted them, and discussed the relative merits of the different styles. One pair from the Cars set said “Ramones” across the butt for no apparent reason and it amuses me to associate Joey Ramone with Sam’s potty training. A visual for you for the next time you hear a Ramones song.
