Ben turned 40 last week and he decided that he needs to tackle his forties as a lean mean fighting machine so he's geared up for a round of exercise and healthy eating. This time he's not doing any sort of diet, he's just trying to decrease the amount he eats and make better food choices. I'm all for that, it seems like a reasonable way to do it so I'm happy to jump on the bandwagon this time. But there is always an unintended consequence and this time it's that Ben's decided that since he'll be eating less food, he's only going to eat the best food. Yesterday he stopped at the store and bought a boatload of organic stuff which led to a $31 pasta and meat sauce dinner. Wowza! Now, there were some leftovers and part of it was a bottle of olive oil but whew, we could go broke doing this. But I have to admit, the organic ground beef he got was vastly superior to the stuff at the grocery store.
Suggestions for good organic stuff that won't drive us to the poorhouse? Yes, I could grow the food but I've tried that and let's just say I'm not too lazy to sacrifice everything to the resident bunnies and woodchucks. Farmer's market here I come! I sometimes buy organic produce and other products but rarely even look at organic meat area because with Ben easily eating a 12 oz steak at a sitting it really wasn't financially feasible. If he's going to do a more standard 3 or 4 oz serving, we might actually be able to do this. I know that at the farmers market there are some sellers who sell portions of a side of (organic) beef but I'm afraid to mention it because I know Ben would be right on it, right this second. He's a tad impulsive.

Sorry - can't help with any suggestions here - I don't spend money on anything organic. But kudos to Ben for getting healthy. :-)
Oh wait - the Cheese Traders on Williston Road has good deals on organic stuff (but not beef).
I don't know if Safeway is a grocery chain near you, but they've introduced an organic line of products that I imagine are of a slightly more reasonable cost.
Also, do you have a Jewish community near you? (Excuse me if that sounds ridiculous. I don't know the cultural geography of Vermont at all.) Kosher meats are pretty yum, although not as strict as organic in terms of the feed the animals are given.
Legumes!!! Even organic ones are pretty cheap, I think.
