Idealism gone dumb

A recent event here in Burlington is that some UVM students went on a hunger strike to try to force the university into paying all employees a livable wage. The idealists started their hunger strike on Monday.

On Sat. we were treated to this headline on the front page: "Hunger strike ends: Students decide workers make livable wage after all"

I nearly snorted coffee out my nose when I read that.

Here's what I envision...

Hungry Dude One: Wow, that was some really good weed.

Hungry Dude Two: Yeah, but now I've got the munchies really really bad.

Hungry Dude One: What's more important? Enjoying the might high or sticking with this stupid hunger strike.

Hungry Dude Two: There must be a way to have both.

Hungry Dude One: What if we just say we were wrong in the first place?

Hey math-impaired uniformed activist dudes! How about doing a bit of research before you do something stupid like a hunger strike?

I have to give the university credit though, they didn't ridicule the students, at least not in public.

Bwaa ha ha ha ha!! Great headline. Fabulous headline!! lol I couldn't find the article that had that headline, but from other articles that i read about it, the activists said nothing of the kind, but said UVM officials gave them a verbal agreement to look into it. They even got it on tape...lol

Anyway, you are right. I don't think they did their homework before they decided for whom to stage a hunger strike! Granted, $10.60 to start isn't a ton, given how expensive housing is in Burlington, but they do get benefits, plus they have to pay in very little at all for said bennies. Seems like they should have staged a hunger strike for the workers at McDonalds instead...lol

Okay, now I found the article that where the protesters say, "Oops, we wish we had had more information before we started this." LOL

The headline wasn't on line which I found highly disappointing. It's best to see it in its raw state so I should have scanned it in, shouldn't I? But then again, no scanner at home so it's unlikely to happen.

I'm sure the university would have told them just about anything but you know that commissions are a dime a dozen and it doesn't mean anything.

But at least the dudes aren't hungry any more.

The students were demanding 10.63 an hour for the workers, including the value of benefits, not knowing that the workers already made 10.68! Tremendous!
