Oh yeah, when you last heard from our heroine, she was on her way to Cape Cod for a short vacation. And then time slipped away from her and life got in the way of the blog. It may be hard to believe that the blog isn't the number one priority in life but sometimes it just happens.
We drove. We slept. We swam (well, Sam and I swam and Ben stayed in the cottage and worked most of the day. Now, you really didn't expect to see me in a swimsuit, did you? My sister in law told me that putting her picture in a bathing suit on the blog would ruin our relationship forever or made death threats or something similar but not the same as that and while I toyed with messing with her I decided it might not be prudent and reasonable). Sam had the perpetual swimming wedgie.
Nick treated him to a ride on a boogie board. Then Sam tried to return the favor. I love the way Nick is braced to go in this picture, especially since Sam was able move the board by about 1/100 of an inch. My nephews did some pretty impressive sailing -- we watched but didn't ride and in hindsight I regret we didn't ask for a ride. At the end of the day we slowly meandered our way back up to the cottage.
My brother in law took us for a ride on a motorboat to a spot where we all jumped overboard and swam except for Sam who fell overboard and swam. Fortunately or unfortunately (for the blog) it wasn't very dramatic; he wasn't swept off by a stiff breeze and wasn't pushed overboard by irate relatives, he just slipped off the ladder as he was deciding whether or not he should come in the water. Sam was both terrified and delighted by the speed and managed to fall asleep in terror.
We meandered in Woods Hole checking out the sights, took some pictures of my sister in law (Sarah) and neice (Elise -- Sam was delighted to spend time with Elise and wanted to keep her forever).Sarah attempted to take a rare family shot although Sam just wouldn't cooperate and this doesn't do Ben justice - he definitely looks better in real life than he does here.
What else did we do? We ate of course. Ask Ben about his first snack stop on the way there (it was only 30 minutes after we set out and we ended up with an impressive quantity of candy). Ask Ben about the three lobsters he ate. Ask Nick about the three he ate too. Sam wouldn't taste it but he ate lots of other goodies without complaint. We also verified the link between lots of sweets and poor behavior in small children. Yikes!
We headed back to Vermont stopping to visit Ben's Aunt Mary. We haven't seen her for ages and she charmed Sam with her small doggies and by letting him win at his own version of checkers.
It took us NINE HOURS to get back (five to get there). Slow, miserable, traffic and grumping filled hours. On the way we spotted a turkey that in earlier times would have graced the table of a pilgrim had it been so bold as to hang out at the side of the street in traffic. I'm sure Ben was thinking LUNCH when he saw this dude.
