Yesterday was my birthday and in honor of such a wonderful and important occasion Ben decided to make a birthday cake. I gave him a subtle hint ("I want a German Chocolate cake") to head off the inevitable carrot cake and he took the hint and went to epicurious.com.
Now, we do have to make things nut free for Sam but even without pecans this cake ROCKED! Moist, rich, and coconutty it was the perfect cake.
Now, baking is definitely not Ben's area of expertise. Once he made chocolate chip cookies on a dare and didn't know what it meant to cream the sugar and butter so he just melted the butter and mixed them together. Flat cookies but still good. He didn't realize I have a collection of cake pans stored away in a place he didn't think to look so he ended up baking each of the three layers indivually in a springform pan but maybe that's the key to a nice moist cake? Or maybe it's related to the pound of butter? Either way, it was delicious!
I think I'm going to request this one every year....

Beautiful cake!
Reading this, one might believe that you received only ONE chocolate cake for your birthday. That would be sad...
I want cake!
