Celebrations should happen day after day after day, correct? In Sam's mind, that's the way it should happen.
For his birthday, Susan got tickets for the Polar Express, a fundraiser for the Vermont's Children's Trust. We've done this once before, two years ago, and really enjoyed it. This time we went during the day rather than at night and I think it loses some of the charm that way. Sam immediately figured out that the train changed directions and was heading right back the way we came. Still, arriving at the "North Pole" must have confused him a bit because he wondered how we were going to get home from there if we didn't get back on the train. I told him that for some reason our car was at the North Pole which was surprisingly near our house.
When we got off the train to go into the station, Sam was the very first off the train. All the elves lined up along the path started welcoming him by name (they gave the kids name tags), there must have been at least 30 people talking to him. It was somewhat disconcerting for me and his eyes looked as though they were going to pop out of his face. I think he was somewhat terrified.
To further the stress, Santa appeared. Sam's still pretty hesitant with strangers and had no real desired to go up and hug the very large man in white facial hair. Santa did manage to shake his hand.
Back at home, we had Sam's birthday dinner -- pizza! I can always support a pizza for dinner option. Then cake number two, this time I just assembled it from cupcakes I'd made from the party because, well, I was feeling lazy. But I made it look crazy.....
Happy fifth birthday Baby!
Oh, for the third, and hopefully last part of the birthday celebration Sam brought cookies for his class at school on Monday.
