Happy Birthday Baby

Wow, two years old today. Where did the time go? Just two short years ago he came into this world wide eyed and curious and today, he's still wide eyed and curious but a whole lot bigger and able to find a lot more trouble. I wish I could relive the day of his birth...well, after that whole giving birth thing. I remember being in awe of that tiny little bundle that did a whole lot of sleeping and not much else that first day. I think I held him for the entire first day except for a little break to take a shower.

Happy birthday little boy. You'll always be my baby.

Today was nuts with the prep work for the birthday, the cleaning since the house was a disaster and you know, trying to do it all while Sam is hanging from my knees. I'm beginning to think that getting ambitious on his birthday is probably a very bad thing since he spends the whole time trying to get my attention. That's obviously what's important to him, not a birthday cake, homemade pizzas and a clean house. I think my priorities were screwed up.

We had a small birthday party for him with Ben's parents. He seemed a bit overwhelmed by the presents and the cake and, oh, just about everything. But he still had fun dismantling the cake and opening presents. The highlight for him was a Sodor crane train set from his Aunt Sarah and Uncle Nat. He wouldn't let anyone else touch the trains. "Mine!" "No!" But of course we were all allowed to set up track for him.

Take a look at the cake...train or tractor? It seems to be pretty interchangeable to everyone. It started out as ordinary white frosting (prior to the transformation to colors not seen in nature) on white cake. Sam loved the cake and helped himself to whichever parts appealed to him from all over the cake. He especially liked the "coal" (crushed oreo cookies) that he pinched off the top of the car. He didn't notice that Santa was driving the train (tractor?) but then again, Santa isn't really part of his world at this point.

The aftermath was not pretty so of course I'll try to include a picture of that too. Wheels? Those must be removed but not eaten for some strange reason. Actually, I'm not sure he ate any of it; more fun to just make a mess.

We'd planned to make a tradition of putting up the Christmas tree on his birthday and well, the tree is up and the lights are on as well as they can be with the "help" of a two year old so I had about 1 minute per strand of lights. Again, overambitious.
