Hula hooper

Last night we went to a child-centered musical event at Shelburne Farms. The performer was T-bone something or other, a former math teacher turned entertainer and at first I found it rather tedious but then I saw Sam slowly get more and more involved in the performance and I relented on my hard-nosed analysis. This guy brought props, lots and lots of props: hats, flags, beach balls, and musical instruments. Oh, and those were just the items we saw before we left at intermission. The highlight, and oh I wish I’d brought the video camera, was Sam trying to use a hula hoop.

He watched the “big kids” and gave it a try. His technique consisted of giving the hoop a huge push to start it turning and then turning himself around and around while the hoop fell to the ground. I’m not sure how many times he did this but we finally had to return the hula hoop and drag him home.

Of course my technique is no more effective than his.
