A few thoughts on the cake pan…it takes a good 20 minutes or so to grease and flour the pan. I knew it would be that way but I was in denial until I was in the middle of the process. There were lots of small corners and I ended up putting too much shortening in there to make sure I covered it so I lost some of the detail. The interior of the pan is gold so when the cake was done, the outside wasn’t as brown as I had hoped.
The cake I made was nice and fluffy but I think the detail would have been nicer had I had a heavier cake, perhaps the one included with the pan. I really wanted a cake that would taste good without frosting so I didn’t want to risk using a new recipe; the fluffiness of the my cake also made the pan overflow a bit but it didn’t cause release problems. I think the nonstick surface of the pan is impressive and wonder if I could get away with using an oil spray and flour to grease the pan.
I'm hoping to get a great picture of Sam when he first sees the cake tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Is this it?
Yes! That's the pan. Mom told me about it so I went searching and our local store had it. The woman there said they've sold a bunch of them so it appears that Sam isn't alone in his love of trains.
For some reason I can't see the pictures in this post this morning. Wonder what's up with that?
That's fantastic!
I love, love, love the "steam" on the engine. You are so creative!
I've heard that the Pam flour spray is really good for baking. I would think it would be a life-saver for a pan like this.
That's so cute. Sam will be thrilled. How long did it take you do do it?
Unbelievable. I want a train cake too!
It took abouut 2 hours to decorate (including making the royal icing...is there any such thing as a small batch?) and more to clean up afterward.
And then there was the bellyache because of all the candy..you can't just leave the broken ones and they seem to sneak into your mouth you know.
Do you suppose Sam is going to let you cut it? LOL
