I know how to turn my kid into a zombie

All it takes is a stupid little bald headed dude. Meet Caillou.
Caillou is Sam's introduction to his own TV program, the first he's watched regularly. Caillou doesn't get a lot of press compared to his better known peers such as Thomas, Dora, or Elmo and that was exactly the reason I relented and decided to let him watch the show. Oh, and that 30 minutes of peace every now and then. There is very little merchandising around Caillou so I'm not concerned that Sam'll be begging me for some useless toy or other and I don't have to succumb to Caillou underpants although that might actually make my day since Sam's toilet habits are somewhat less than stellar at this point.

This decision has had several unintentional side effects.
  • First off, and most annoyingly, Caillou has a very horrible fake giggle. Fingernails on a chalkboard bad. Now Sam has a very annoying fake giggle.
  • The first things Sam says in the morning is now "Mama, can I watch Caillou?" TV in the morning? Say it isn't so! Actually, this is rather funny because I always tell Sam "We don't watch TV in the morning!" so now when Ben flips on the TV in the morning Sam tells him "Daddy we don't watch TV in the morning" and of course I can't help letting out my own little REAL giggle. Ben finds it somewhat annoying for some reason.
  • Caillou has inspired Sam to master the TIVO remote. He screws up his face in concentration and pushes buttons. He has not yet succeeded but he has gotten to the main TV show listing. I imagine the written first word he recognizes that is not SAM will be Caillou. Please don't encourage this.

My boy is well on his way to full couch potato status. Will he graduate to more mature programming or will he be eating chips, drinking beer, and scratching while watching a cartoon character? Oh wait, isn't that what we used to do with the Simpsons?

Yep, Caillou's laugh is pretty grating after a while, but kids like that show, and he behaves pretty much like a four year old, down to the whining and what not. I think you are safe from turning him into a zombie if he watches an occasional half hour of it. :-) The crazy thing about these shows is that though the kids behave realistically, the adults do not. You never see an adult lose their temper? NOW, how realistic is THAT? lol Actually, I much prefer "Little Bill", which Lukas used to watch on Nickoloean, but I don't think it's on anymore. Netflix probably has it.
