Weather: perfect
Sam: good mood
Me: good mood
We headed out to hike up a small mountain, Mt. Philo. He practically ran up the mountain with lots of stops to check out centipedes, chipmunks, rocks, and other people and lots of warnings to me to be careful. It smelled amazing -- pine trees, drying leaves, a hint of composting wood. We snacked at the top while sitting in the sun enjoying the view and being amused to realize that the sound of lots of school children hiking up a mountain isn't all that different from the sound of a flock of geese heading south. Heading down again is when things got a little less cheery although I was amused that rather than getting tired, Sam says he "ran out of air." Perhaps he thinks he's under the water? I pumped him full of air (presses on the back) at regular intervals on the way down and he made it back in a relatively good mood.
Then we were off to the Shelburne Museum where we wandered the grounds smelling all the fermenting apples falling off the trees, looking at fancy Pullman train cars (now that is traveling in style!) and ancient steam engines, bemoaning the fact that the carousel was out of order for the day, and watching the ducks splashing around the pond.
Home for ice cream and dinner, yes, in that order.
An hour of quiet.
Sammy's uneventful bedtime.
A wonderful fall day; one to remember.

It sounds like a wonderful day! I had been thinking about Mount Philo lately, but now that I know there are centipedes up there, I am NOT going!
