We've been playing cards, lots of cards. At this point he can converse knowledgeably about "face cards" and understand that ace is high. He can hold them in his hands without dropping the cards and he can deal as long as you're patient.
The problem is that I'm running out of kiddy card games after going through Go Fish, War, Concentration, and our version of Old Maid aka Old Joker. I'm looking for suggestions of nice easy card games that won't drive ME crazy.
Crazy Eight is still a bit complex; I tried explaining that one and he just looked confused.
I'm thinking poker is probably a bit premature as I think a prerequisite is the ability to shuffle.
What I should teach him is Solitaire...all the various versions so he wouldn't be sitting next to me saying "Are you finished with that? Are you? Are you?"

Uno cards are easier for grasping the concepts of Crazy Eights, and a LOT MORE FUN. They have machines now for Uno that spit out cards at you and stuff - the kids think that is a blast!
I like Old Maid with actual Old Maid cards, rather than the joker. It breaks up the monotony of seeing the same cards all the time. There are Old Bachelor cards out there too and they're hilarious. I brought old maid to the funeral home and we had a pretty big group of kids desperate to get away from the casket and play some games.
We had (and have) a blast with Blink:

Really fun for all ages. It brings out the super competitive spirit in the Lawtons. I have never, ever beaten Madison.
Oh, and this isn't cards but he might be able to play Waterworks:

It says ages 8 and up, but he might have fun just building water lines with the cards. We played this one a lot growing up but I hardly ever meet other kids who played Waterworks.
Don't forget - you can staple together 2 margarine lids (I know you'll need to get them from somebody else LOL) to make a card holder for something like Uno, where you often have to hold a LOT of cards at once.
