Ah yes! A bike! A bike I found for Sam on Craig's List for either his birthday or Christmas. I asked Ben to put a kick stand on the bike because Sam is enamoured of kick stands and it seemed like a fairly simple request.
Ben put the bike in the back of the truck because I was afraid that one of us would open the trunk of the car while Sam was standing there. At some unknown-to-me point he moved it to the garage.
Today Sam came to me and said "I want to tell you a secret." I bent down because he likes to whisper very softly but right into my ear. "I saw something in the garage that Daddy said not to tell you."
Good job Ben! So now my dilemna. - should I give it to Sam right away because it's already spoiled as a surprise and his current bike is too small or should I hold off and give it to him for his birthday?
In preparation for what must come I went out, got a kick stand, and installed it immediately.

The answer is:
(a) give it to him now, since it's still warm enough to ride it, and
(b) make Ben solely responsible for thinking up, procuring, and paying for an equally impressive CHristmas present for the correct time!
I agree with Beth - let him ride the bike before there is a foot of snow on the ground. My kids have received bikes for Christmas/birthdays before. With b-days in Jan and Feb, they don't get to ride those new wheels much before spring.
