Fun with numbers

Sam's been very curious about numbers lately. He's trying to tell time and time until something happens although he doesn't seem to understand why, when he asks "Can we do it in 1500 hours?", we respond that we really don't know what will happen in two months. But he is pretty good at figuring out where the little hand is so he knows the hour. That big hand though, it's a fickle thing. How can 8:30 be "eight thirty" as well "half past eight?" Why are there 60 minutes in an hour?

We've also been doing lots of counting. Sam will say, at random times, "Can you count to 220?" I'll often count it for him just because, well, it keeps him distracted for a minute .

But the best times are well Sam will ask "Do you know what 100 and 100 and 200 and 200 presents?" and I can answer 600 pronto. He looks at me adoringly because he doesn't yet understand that I'm just adding 2+2+1+1. I don't know why he says "presents" instead of "equals" though but it's cute and I like it so I don't correct him.

We've also been doing lots of addition with fingers and sugar packets. I think the sugar packets indicate that we've been eating out too often lately. Any handy item.

And guess what? Thirteen has now entered into regular use around this house.

Poor kid. He's awfully young to be suffering from triskaidekaphobia.

I can't believe there is a word for fear of 13. Oh wait, yes I can. But he's no longer suffering from triskaidekaphobia; I cured him.
