When I was a kid we had cross country skis, the type that needed to be waxed or more accurately, the type of skis that always had the wrong type of wax. My experience on those was less than fun and it soured me on cross country skiing for years and years.
Of course, my preexisting notion of fun and misery is of no interest to Sam. He's been bugging me to go skiing ever since winter began and I've always put him off. Yesterday, Catamount Outdoor Family Center had a family day where we could try cross country skiing or snowshoeing for free. It's pretty hard to turn down an opportunity like that so I packed Sam in the car and we were off. It was sunny, cold (but out of the single digits), and slightly windy; an excellent day to give it a try. The trails were well groomed, there were people everywhere, and after we figured out how to use the bindings, we were off.
Sam must have fallen 100 times but he LOVED it and is begging to go back. And despite my expectations, I enjoyed it too. We'll go back, sooner rather than later!
