The babysitting conundrum

Back when I was a kid I used to babysit constantly. We lived in a place where there were lots of young families and that was my source of spending money. Now that I’m on the side of NEEDING a babysitter, it’s a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. First off, I have a hard time thinking of leaving Sam with someone we don’t know which is something I never thought about before. I babysat for families I didn’t know at all. Maybe I’m just a worry wart. And now babysitting is actually profitable for kids…they get $7-$10 an hour for it! I must be really old since we got only $1/hr back in my day.

Also, we don’t know teenagers with time to babysit because we just don’t have a huge social circle. And those kids we do know seem to have complex school, sports, and social schedules that don’t allow time for silly things like earning money.

We’ve been taking advantage of our friends and neighbors to watch Sam on the rare occasions we go out for anything but I always feel as though we’re taking advantage of them even when they say they’re happy to do it. Ah what to do? I’ve swapped babysitting with some friends with small kids and that’s really seems to be the best solution so far. Who wouldn't want to babysit such a cutie pie?

I've arranged for a swap for tomorrow night so we can take Ben’s dad out to dinner for his birthday sans Sam. What? A quiet enjoyable meal at a restaurant? Now the trick will be not to talk about Sam all evening.

Kid get 4-5 bucks and hour here. But then, this area is poor. And, still, we don't go out, because there aren't a lot of places to GO!

Cute pic of the boy. A fellow has take advantage of being able to wear a raincoat and nothing else when he is young and people think it's cute. In a few years, he'd get arrested for doing that.

So where are you going to dinner tomorrow? Coyotes??! Somehow I don't think so...

We're going to the Single Pebble. Come on out! I'm sure it's all carb free.

You are being ripped off...here in the Portland area, its about $5/hour, tho my youngest is greatly demanded, and get more usually. I can bring her along next time i drive to vermont, and you can borrow her...kids love her...

What and where is the Single Pebble?

The Single Pebble is a lovely, delicious (but not low carb) Chinese restaurant on Bank Street in Burlington. They have some familiar Chinese dishes, and some truly bizarre ones. (My favorite: "Ants Climbing a Tree"!)

I wonder why babysitters get so much here? Phyllis, why don't you live here?

I can't speak to Portland, but I figure that here, there's just not much for the kids to do, other than extra curricular sports, so they have time for babysitting. Plus, people have more kids, so more of them grow up to be babysitters.

On the other hand, in Burlington, there's plenty for a teenager to do. The schools and community have a lot of extra things, there are malls and places to hang out, so teenagers have busier lives. Plus, people there have fewer kids, hence there are fewer babysitters. It's all about supply and demand.

The Single Pebble sounds good! Maybe next time we visit...IF we can find a babysitter. ;-)

Lisa V I bet you're right about there being things to do around here and a lower birthrate too. Urgh! Well, there are some advantages for that for me too.
